Many local farms offer 2- to 4-hour horseback-riding tours, which may include lunch and hotel pickup. Several excellent companies near Reykjavík are Laxnes Horse Farm in Mosfellsdalur (tel. 566-6197), Eldhestar in Hveragerði (tel. 480-4800), and Íshestar in Hafnarfjörður (tel. 555-7000).

Reykjavík has a handful of golf courses. The Reykjavík Golf Club (tel. 585-0200) runs two 18-hole courses: the oceanside Korpúlfsstaðir to the northeast (Thorsvegur, via Korpúlfsstaðir; bus: 24) and the difficult Grafarholt, Iceland’s premier championship course, to the east (Grafarholtsvegur, off Route 1; bus: 15 or 18). Both are about a 15-minute drive from the city center and stay open during summer evenings. Course fees are 10,300kr, club rental is 5,700kr, cart rental is 6,900kr, and trolley rental is 1,400kr. About 20 minutes from the center is Oddur Golf Club (tel. 565-9092) in Urridavatnsdalir, which opened in 1997 and is widely considered one of the country’s best courses. Surrounded by lava, it’s a frequent host of international tournaments. Course fees are 11,500kr, club rental is 6,000kr, cart rental is 6,500kr, and trolley rental is 500kr. Closer to the center, in Seltjarnarnes, west of Reykjavík, is the casual 9-hole Golfklúbbur Ness, at the end of Suðurströnd (tel. 561-1930), with good ocean views (bus: 11).
