Day visit to Rome
I will be visiting Rome on 31st August while our cruise ship has a day stop at port of Civitavecchia. Due to arrive about 7am, and departs 7pm. Its a very short stay, and I realise I don't have a lot of time. It is my first visit to Rome and looking for suggestions for how to get into the city, and whether to explore on my own, or pre book a guided tour etc. Not really keen on doing one of our cruise line's shore excursions which are expensive and usually rather hectic. I have no burning desire to see any particular attraction so no issues if I miss out some of the well known sights.
I prefer to have a more leisurely tour/visit if thats possible, either with a guide or small group. I think the ship will offer transport only option into city, but as we don't know what time the bus will depart/arrive in city, it will be difficult to pre book a tour. Should I bite the bullet and pre book with cruise line, or wait until we arrive in port and see what is available?
Any suggestions welcome. Thank you
