Help! Two short layovers from Venice to Florida

by PHeymont »

I would worry more about Atlanta, since you will have immigration and have to retrieve and recheck any luggage. If carry-on only, not a problem.

CDG should not be a problem; you aren't changing terminals, and your baggage is checked through.

Thank you. What about passport control at CDG?

In the terminal, and not a big issue. Most of the time will go to walking back into security area for u.s. flight

OK that's good. Any way to stay in Terminal 2 helps.

So what can we do in Atlanta to expedite immigration and customs? We will check our bags.

This is exactly what I wanted to avoid while looking at flights out of VCE:.layovers under 2 hours at both connection airports coming home. Even worse, the first leg is to CDG on Air France, which I have read many complaints about. The problem is I am flying internationally so the stop at CDG includes passport control and the ATL stop includes U.S. immigration. Because of these procedures, I am worried about missing flights and being stuck in Paris or Atlanta. The crappy flight was booked last week so my mom can't change it to one with longer layovers.

I know airlines put people on the next available flight, but that would mean arriving in Gainesville the next day. Here is the flight information:

Air France 8365 VCE - CDG  Depart 12:45  Arrive 2:35 (Terminal 2F)

Layovre at CDG: 1 hour 45 minutes

Delta 85  CDG - ATL  Depart 4:10  Arrive 8:15 (Terminal I)

Layover at ATL: 1 hour 25 minutes

Delta 5609  ATL - GNV  Depart 9:40 (Temrinal S)  Arrive 10:56

I am very excited about going to Italy but dreading this part of the trip!

To expedite your way through immigration and customs in Atlanta, implement Mobile Passport on your smartphone. Mobile Passport is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection app that expedites entry for U.S. citizens into the U.S. at a number of international airports, including Atlanta.  Google "Mobil Passport" for information and download from your app store.

After landing, signon to the app, enter the necessary info, send, and you should receive a receipt by the time you enter the jetway.  When approaching immigration, look for signs directing you to the Mobile Passport station.  The receipt you receive contains a scan code which you scan at both immigration and customs stations.  The process is very fast and for the several times we have used it, there were virtually no lines.

How do I get and use the receipt? By scan code do you mean bar code?

rwhansen, thanks for that!
I've been hoping that app works well...getting ready to try it!

Take care with 'Terminal 2.' It's actually a huge complex of buildings spread over more than a mile. But in your case, you're dealing with 2F where your AF flight arrives and its neighbor 2E where Delta's check-in is located. (2E actually also has two remote halls, but that's after check-in, if your flight uses those gates). Here's a clip of a map, and a link to the best "inside CDG" site I know. I marked your route with yellow highlight. Click to enlarge.

Smart Traveler: The receipt is sent back to the app.  It contains a scanable code, I believe it is a QR code.  Mobile passport allows for multiple travelers, so you receive a receipt for each that you have registered.  After downloading the app, which you must do prior to your trip, you must enter passport info and take a "selfie" picture before registering with Customs and Border Protection.

PHeymont: The app is live at the followiing airports: ATL, ORD,DFW, FLL, MIA, JFK, EWR, MCO, SFO, and SEA.  They say DEN and SJC are coming soon.  Initially, it was only available at ATL, MIA and SEA.  It works very well.  The only problem we have encountered is that immigration people are not always prepared at the Mobile Passport station.  However, the delay is minimal and due, I believe, to fewer people using the app.

I would add that we also have Global Entry.  However, Mobile Passport is much faster, an interview is not required, and there is no charge.

Thanks...we also have Global Entry, and while we've consistently enjoyed the PreCheck privilege that comes with it, we've found that the GE kiosks at Kennedy have given us printout with X on 11 out of 12 tries, with no explanation (although it's still quicker than going through the line...) That's exactly why we're looking forword to using the app next month coming back through JFK.
