By and large, people in Yellowknife aren't scared of a drink, and nightlife revolves around bars and pubs. Increasingly, there's a live music scene in Yellowknife.
The Black Knight (4910 49 St.; tel. 867/920-4041) has an English-pub feel to it and is one of the few places in Yellowknife serving Guinness beer on tap. It also has the largest selection of scotches in town (somewhere around 120). The pub is open 11am until 2am every day except Sunday. The Top Knight, a nightclub upstairs from the pub, offers dancing and informal dining.
Surly Bob's (4910 50th Ave.; tel. 867/873-5626) is a sports bar full of loud and proud sports fans during the playoff seasons. On a good night, Bob has been known to crack a smile. The bar has a full kitchen, and Friday and Saturday nights are Lobster Night for C$35.
The 20-something crowd can be found dancing to Lady Gaga and Kanye West, and drinking at the Raven (5030 50th St.; tel. 867/669-9755).
The city's infamous bar the Gold Range (5010 50th St.; tel. 867/873-4441), also known as the "Strange Range," has live music and local characters. Many locals make the Gold Range the last stop during a night out; you can't say you've seen Yellowknife if you haven't seen the Strange Range. Take note: The bar is on a street more derelict than dangerous.
If you are looking for a place to dance the night away, check out Sam's Monkey Tree (483 Range Lake Rd.; tel. 867/920-4914), but be prepared to stand in line after 10:30pm in the summer. It's a popular spot with university students home for the summer.
