This now global salad chain began right here, in Georgetown. Sweetgreen was the brainchild of three eco-conscious Georgetown University students who wanted to provide homegrown, healthy options for diners. The first Sweetgreen opened nearby on M Street in 2007; today, these popular eateries number more than 120 nationwide, popping up all over D.C. including in Dupont Circle (1512 Connecticut Ave. NW; tel. 202/387-9338), 14th & U Street Corridor (1461 P St. NW; tel. 202/234-7336), Farragut Square (888 17th St. NW; tel. 202/506-3079), and Penn Quarter (624 E St. NW; tel. 202/804-2250). Choose one of the 15 or so signature salads (my fave, the guacamole greens: organic mesclun, avocado, roasted chicken, red onion, tomatoes, tortilla chips, fresh lime squeeze, lime cilantro jalapeno vinaigrette), or create your own. Tip: Get your salad to go and walk a few blocks to the Georgetown Waterfront, where you can enjoy your food on a park bench overlooking the Potomac River.
