Canoeing & Kayaking

The Sunshine Coast, with its fjord-notched coastline, myriad islands, and protected waters, makes for excellent kayaking. The Desolation Sound area, north of Lund, is especially popular. The Powell Forest Canoe Route, a 4- to 8-day backcountry paddle, links four lakes in an 81km (50-mile) circuit. Powell River Sea Kayaks (tel. 866/617-4444 or 604/483-2160; www.bcseakayak.com) has its office 30km (19 miles) north of Powell River on Okeover Inlet, and offers rentals and tours to adjacent Desolation Sound.

Diving

The center for diving along the Sunshine Coast, Powell River boasts visibility of over 30m (98 ft.) in winter, lots of sea life, and varied terrain. Area dive spots include five shipwrecks and several boats sunk as artificial reefs. Alpha Dive Services, 7050 Field St. (tel. 604/485-6939; www.divepowellriver.com), is one of the area's leading outfitters, with a shop in Powell River and diving operations in Okeover Inlet and Desolation Sound.
