Horse Racing -- Two racetracks hold events on either Saturday or Sunday throughout the year: the recommended Club Hípico, Blanco Encalada 2540 (tel. 2/683-9600; www.clubhipico.cl), and the Hipódromo Chile, Avenida Vivaceta in Independencia (tel. 2/270-9200; www.hipodromo.cl). The Hípico's classic event, El Ensayo, takes place the first Sunday in November and always provides a colorful Chilean spectacle as attendees arm themselves with grills and barbecue meat in the middle of the racetrack oval. The Hipódromo's classic St. Leger is the second week in December, but it takes longer to get to than the Club Hípico.

Soccer (Football) -- Top football (as soccer is called here) games are held at three stadiums: Estadio Monumental, Avenida Grecia and Marathon; Universidad de Chile, Camp de Deportes 565 (both are in the Ñuñoa neighborhood); and Universidad Católica, Andrés Bello 2782, in Providencia. Check the sports pages of any local newspaper for game scheduling. Though fútbol is popular in Chile, fans aren't quite as maniacal as they are in Argentina and Brazil.
