Greens was, arguably, the first restaurant in the U.S. to take a gourmet approach to vegetarian food, with an ambitious menu, extensive wine list, and a serene decor of hand-carved wood and oversize windows offering up one of the best water views in the city. (The restaurant is in a former warehouse at Fort Mason.) Its status remains untouched. Come here even if you’re a devoted carnivore: The food is delicious and jumps continents with ease, offering terrific veggie takes on Moroccan, Mexican, Asian, and Italian foods. Or opt for the “Greens to Go” menu (daily 9am–4pm) if you’d like to take a picnic on the Marina Green.
