The Highline Trail is a beautiful 51-mile hike along the lower slope of the Mogollon Rim, with fine mountain vistas, intriguing rock formations, and towering stands of Ponderosa pines. Following years of neglect, the trail was rebuilt in 2017 and, though still challenging, has been greatly improved. If you’d like to go horseback riding on the Highline, try Kohl’s Ranch Stables on Hwy. 260, 17 miles north of Payson (tel. 928/478-0030). A 2-hour ride costs $65.

You can find out more about this and other area trails at the Payson Ranger Station, 1009 E. Ariz. 260 (www.fs.usda.gov/tonto; tel. 928/474-7900), at the east end of town. Several area trails are open for mountain biking; mountain bikes can be rented at Rim Country Recreation (tel. 928/978-7153).
