• Archery Summit (tel. 503/864-4300): Big wines with a big reputation are produced from estate-grown pinot noir grapes at this impressive facility in the Dundee Hills. Pinot noir is the only wine they produce here.

  • Argyle Winery (tel. 888/427-4953 or 503/538-8520): While this winery produces good pinot noir and chardonnay, it is most recommendable for its outstanding sparkling wines. At any given time, they're likely to have four or more different styles of sparklers available.

  • Bergstrom (tel. 503/554-0468): Look over a listing of Oregon's best wines, and you'll always find quite a few bottles from this winery. Of course, pinot noir is the specialty, but they also produce a highly regarded chardonnay.

  • Domaine Drouhin Oregon (tel. 503/864-2700): When a French winery starts making pinot noir in Oregon, you know it must be a good climate for wine. Certain vintages of Domaine Drouhin's Laurène pinot noir have been among the best pinots I've ever tasted.

  • Domaine Serene (tel. 866/864-6555 or 503/864-4600): Producing pinot noir, chardonnay, and Syrah, this winery high in the Red Hills above Dundee is reliably consistent.

  • Lange Estate Winery (tel. 503/538-6476): This is the winery that turned me into a die-hard pinot noir fan back in the mid-1990s. The estate pinot noirs here are still among the best produced in the state.

  • Penner-Ash Wine Cellars (tel. 503/554-5545): Winemaker Lynn Penner-Ash crafts pinot noirs and Syrahs of lingering lushness. She also has one of the most beautifully situated wineries in the region.

  • Hillcrest Vineyard (tel. 541/673-3709): This winery in southern Oregon has been in business since 1961 and is the state's oldest estate winery. Hot summers allow Hillcrest to produce excellent cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and zinfandel.
