If you’re like me, Pearl River will unleash yens you never knew you had. You’ll walk into this two-story department store dedicated to goods imported from Asia, and suddenly realize how much you desperately need lacquered chopsticks, or a silk brocaded mandarin shirt, or that industrial-sized bag of rice crackers. Part of the seduction is the bright colors, intricate designs, and silky textures of the clothes; a dazzling number of choices. And prices are reasonable in the extreme. I have found lovely silk shirts marked down to just $15, a wedding-gift-worthy hand-glazed Japanese bowl going for just $25, and fun lamps for $14.50. And if all the shopping tires you out, simply retire to the mezzanine gallery which showcases the work of Asian-American artists in various stages of their career. In 2017, a second location opened in Chelsea Market (75 9th Ave. between 15th and 16th st.; tel. 212/645-5792).
