In the Mount Baker Area

The best accommodations at the foot of Mount Baker are to be had through Mt. Baker Lodging, 7463 Mt. Baker Hwy. (P.O. Box 2002), Maple Falls, WA 98266-2002 (tel. 800/709-7669 or 360/599-2453; www.mtbakerlodging.com), which rents out dozens of cabins, houses, and condos in a wide range of rates.

Campgrounds

In the Mount Baker Area -- Several campgrounds are in the forests on the banks of the Nooksack River along Mount Baker Highway. Silver Fir Campground (20 campsites) 13 miles east of Glacier, is closest to the Heather Meadows area, and Douglas Fir Campground (29 campsites), 2 miles east of Glacier, is the next best choice. You can make reservations for both of these campgrounds at Recreation.gov (tel. 877/444-6777 or 518/885-3639). North of Maple Falls is Silver Lake County Park, 9006 Silver Lake Rd. (tel. 360/599-2776; www.co.whatcom.wa.us/parks/silverlake/silverlake.jsp), the area's most developed campground (92 campsites).

Along the North Cascades Scenic Highway -- Outside the town of Newhalem, on the North Cascades Highway, are Goodell Creek (21 campsites) and Newhalem Creek (111 campsites), which is the site of the North Cascades Visitor Center. The next campground east is at Colonial Creek (101 campsites) on the bank of Diablo Lake. This campground has some very nice sites right on the water.

East of Marblemount, a couple of small campgrounds are on the Cascade River Road, which leads to the trail head for the popular hike to Cascade Pass. Marble Creek (22 campsites) is 8 miles east of Marblemount, and Mineral Park (22 campsites) is 15 miles east of Marblemount. Some National Forest campgrounds accept reservations.
