ARRIVING

BY CAR: From Boston, take Route 1A north through Lynn and Swampscott; in Swampscott, take Lynn Shore Drive to Route 129, and follow it into Marblehead. Except at rush hour, allow at least 45 minutes. Parking is tough, especially in Old Town—grab the first spot you see. From Marblehead, take Route 114 west into downtown Salem.

BY BUS: MBTA (tel. 800/392-6100 or tel. 617/222-3200) bus no. 441/442 runs from Haymarket (Orange or Green Line) in Boston to downtown Marblehead on weekdays; on weekends service is from Wonderland station at the end of the Blue Line. During weekday rush hours, bus no. 448/449 connects Marblehead to Boston’s Downtown Crossing. The trip takes about an hour.

GETTING AROUND

Marblehead’s downtown area is fairly compact and moderately hilly, but its narrow streets make driving difficult—your best option is to park the car and hoof it.
