Amusingly, some pubs near the Houses of Parliament are equipped with what’s called a “division bell,” which rings—rather like a fire alarm, which panics unknowing guests—to warn socializing MPs they have only 8 minutes to scurry back to vote. The Marquis, a single-room, traditional pub with bare floorboards and high wood walls, is supported by government types (it’s not even open on weekends) and prides itself on real hand-pumped ale. Other pubs have the bells, too—St. Stephens Tavern on Bridge Street across from Big Ben and the Red Lion on Whitehall—but they’re cloyingly touristy.
