Back in the day, this trattoria was so well-known that the Marx Brothers dined here on their only trip to Blighty. Today, it’s an unpretentious place for good Italian food that, unlike most of the chains in town, actually has a pedigree. The homemade pastas are a notch more creative than other kitchens’ at this level: saffron gnocchi topped with burrata mozzarella and caramelized onions, and ravioli asparagi stuffed with gorgonzola and walnut, both satisfyingly rich. This is the 1934 original, but there’s one near Waterloo at the Old Vic (61 The Cut, SE1; [tel] 020/7261-1221) and one near Selfridge’s (9 St Christopher’s Place, W1; [tel] 020/7486-3196), all open the same hours.
