The mere mention of Killington's access road no doubt provokes deep horror at poultry farms across the nation. Every restaurant on the road seems to serve up chicken wings -- plenty of them. If you love wings, especially free wings, you'll be in heaven. Alas, if you're looking for something more adventurous, you'll find that the access road is home to an astonishing level of culinary mediocrity -- bland pasta, tired pizza, and soggy nachos -- served by often indifferent, harried staff. These restaurants are adequate spots to carbo-load the family for a day on the slopes or hiking the mountains, and if you're with a group of friends, you may not mind the middling quality; but don't expect much of a dining adventure.
In a pinch or with the kids, check out The Pasta Pot (tel. 802/422-3004), on Rte. 4 in Killington, a locals' place on the same flat, busy stretch of highway as Hemingway's . Here you'll find some of the best garlic bread in New England, plus great dressings on the salads. The main meals are mostly rather standard pasta-and-red sauce fare -- but because there's an attached bar, this establishment is open later than many other spots in the area. It's closed Monday through Wednesday.
