Getting There -- The Chena Hot Springs Road meets the Steese Expressway about 5 miles north of downtown Fairbanks. (Information on renting a car in Fairbanks can be found at the beginning of this chapter.) The resort offers rides for hotel guests from anywhere in Fairbanks. Rates are $150 round-trip for one person or $125 per person for two or more passengers on the same reservation. Arrange for this at least 72 hours in advance.

Visitor Information -- For outdoors information, check the Fairbanks Alaska Public Lands Information Center, in the Morris Thompson center at 101 Dunkel St. (tel. 907/459-3730; www.alaskacenters.gov). The Chena River State Recreation Area is managed by the Alaska Division of Parks, which interacts with the public through a Public Information Center (tel. 907/451-2708; www.alaskastateparks.org). The agency's trail, river, and road guides are available at trail-head kiosks, from the public lands center, on the website, or in the area's Chena Trailmarker brochure. Contact the parks public information center with questions about the public cabins in the area.
